TOWNSSILK Silk Care Guide: How to Properly Care for and Store Silk

Jun 17, 2025 townssilk

Silk has always symbolized elegance, luxury, and an incomparably soft feel. Many people rarely wear silk out of concern for complicated care. However, proper silk care at home is surprisingly simple—once you know how.

Can You Wash Silk at Home? The Most Common Misconceptions

It's often said that silk must be dry cleaned, is not machine washable, and should never be ironed. These beliefs are widespread—but incorrect.

TWONSSILK recommends understanding the nature of real silk and acting accordingly: Most silk fabrics can be easily cleaned at home with a pH-neutral detergent, on a gentle cycle, and with a little care. A laundry bag also helps protect the fabric from abrasion in the machine.

The Right Detergent: Why pH-Neutral Matters

Silk's natural fibers are sensitive to chemical additives. Detergents with bleach, enzymes, or alcohol can damage the fibers, cause color fading, and permanently ruin the shiny surface.

Recommendation:

- Use only pH-neutral or silk-specific detergents

- Avoid alkaline, enzyme-based, or chlorine-based products

- Always test new products on an inconspicuous area first

Alternatively, detergents for baby clothes or wool/delicates can also be used.

Hand Wash or Machine Wash? How to Clean Silk Properly

Washing Silk by Hand:

- Use cold water and silk detergent

- Gently move the fabric, do not rub or wring

- Rinse thoroughly and lay flat to dry

Washing Silk in the Machine:

- Place silk in a laundry bag

- Choose cold wash and delicate cycle

- Do not wash with rough fabrics

- Remove immediately after washing and gently press out excess water

Avoid hot water or high spin cycles—these can cause shrinkage and distortion.

Drying Silk Properly: Mistakes to Avoid

Many people hang silk garments or even put them in the dryer—both damage the fabric.

This is how to dry silk properly:

- Lay flat on a towel or drying rack

- Dry in the shade, avoid direct sunlight

- Do not wring or spin dry

- Gently press out water, do not rub

Laying flat preserves the shape and natural luster of silk—a key step for longevity.

Ironing Silk? Yes – but Carefully

Silk can be ironed if the temperature is right.

Ironing Tips:

- Turn the garment inside out

- Set iron to “Silk” or the lowest setting

- Place a cloth between the fabric and the iron

- Do not press or glide, just tap briefly (max. 3 seconds)

- Alternatively: Use a steamer or hang in a steamy bathroom

Be careful not to apply direct high heat to the surface—this can cause discoloration.

Storing Silk: How to Keep It Beautiful for Years

Proper storage ensures long-lasting beauty—even after many years.

Storage Tips:

- Use padded or velvet hangers

- Store silk in a cool, dry, dark closet

- Protect from sunlight and moisture

- Reposition garments regularly to avoid pressure marks

- Do not use metal or raw wood hangers—they can stain or rust

Well-stored silk retains its shape and shine.

Stains on Silk? How to Respond Correctly

Quick action is crucial when silk gets stained.

Stain Removal for Silk:

- Blot immediately with a cloth, do not rub

- Treat light stains with silk detergent

- Makeup or drinks: dab gently with a 1:1 vinegar-water mixture

- Grease stains: apply cornstarch or baking soda, brush off after a few hours

Avoid bleach, stain sticks, or chlorine-based products—these permanently damage the delicate fibers. Always test first in a hidden area.
